Have you noticed? As time goes on, we keep getting more abbreviations.
From texting shortcuts (if you have a teen with a smartphone, you know) to professional credentials – keeping abreast of what each one means and represents makes it feel as though we need a modern-day Rosetta Stone.
Now, as far as texting, we may not be qualified (or cool enough) to share what ‘YGTR’ ‘GAHOY’ or ‘IANAL’ stand for.
However, when it comes to mental health and deciphering the differences between specialties – including what the letters after everyone’s name stand for? As providers of mental health services in Roseville, that we know a thing or two about.
Let’s dig in.
Psychologist (PhD or PsyD)
Psychologists help individuals with their mental health. A doctoral degree in this field (noted by the credentials PhD or PsyD) usually takes 4 to 6 years to obtain, and that’s after the completion of an undergrad. Coursework for a PhD expands beyond the realm of human behavior, and covers things like statistics, research, ethics, social dynamics, a wide range of different treatment modalities, and more.
Some psychologists see patients in a clinical setting for 45 to 50-minute sessions. Others are clinical directors, and some focus on research. Some dabble in a little of everything.
For those of you seeking a psychotherapist in Roseville, give us a call. Our clinic specializes in treating anxiety, depression, PTSD, as well as individual and couples counseling.
Psychiatrist (MD, DO)
Psychiatrists are medical doctors who specialize in diagnosing and treating mental health disorders. Psychiatrists are the ones who prescribe medications, such as antidepressants and mood stabilizers.
Becoming a psychiatrist who treats adults takes 12 additional years of education after high school, and 14 years for those who want to specialize in treating kids.
For those who see a psychiatrist, the intake session is the longest.
Follow up sessions are usually centered around medication management, and last 15 to 20-minutes.
Some people may see a psychologist or LMFT in conjunction with a psychiatrist.
Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC)
People with this credential focus on treating populations who suffer from mental health and substance abuse issues, offering counseling, education, and support.
In order to see patients, people with this credential must have completed a master’s degree in the field, and then they’re required to obtain a number of hours seeing patients in a therapeutic capacity, under the supervision of a licensed mental health professional.
LPCC’s may choose to work in private practice. Some may choose a primary focus, such as addiction. Others may work as a school counselor, or as part of a larger therapeutic practice.
Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT)
Similar to LPCC’s, a LMFT requires graduate level education, followed by a number of supervised hours.
LMFT’s primary focus is centered around family, relationship, and social dynamics. They evaluate, diagnose and treat mental health disorders and emotional dysregulation, and are able to work with all ages. Some focus on couple’s counseling, others work primarily with kids. Like LPCC’s, LMFT’s can choose private practice, or work for an organization.
If you’re looking for a family therapist in Roseville, give us a call. We see all ages in individual sessions. We also provide couples counseling, and sometimes even work with entire families.
Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW)
A LCSW is a graduate level degree, and requires post-grad supervision by another licensed mental health practitioner.
Social workers are able to evaluate and diagnose as well, and work with patients one-on-one, or in a group setting. The LCSW approach is more community based. People with these credentials work in schools, social agencies, and various other mental health related clinics and fields.
