2025 Calm: Beat Anxiety Now!Ah, the new year. A time of excitement and anticipation… and for those who suffer from anxiety, unfortunately there’s some of that, too.

To help you reduce stress and breathe easy in the new year, we’ve got some practical tips on setting resolutions without increasing anxiety.

Make Sure Your Goals are Actually Yours

It’s easy to get swept up in the excitement of goal setting, and as a result choose resolutions simply because they sound good… even when they don’t fully resonate with who we are and what we want.

Therefore, it’s important to really examine yours. Are they something you want, or are you choosing your resolutions to please others?

Focus on One Thing at a Time

Focus on One Thing at a TimeIt can be easy to “overindulge” in the magic of goal setting, and pile one hefty aspiration on top of the next. Then, once the excitement wears off, reality hits.

For the bigger goals that require more effort than, say, resolving to floss every night or drink more water, try to focus on just one at a time.

Often, a big goal will affect other areas of your life, and may help you reach other goals in the process. For example, the lofty goal of scaling your business so you make more money may result in you paying off debt, and saving for a down payment—two other goals on your list.

If you overload yourself by being too ambitious, you’re going to increase your anxiety as well.

Check in With Yourself Regularly

It can be really helpful to check in with yourself regularly to note where you are, and how you’re feeling.

If you’re overwhelmed or struggling, give yourself permission to put something on pause, and instead focus on things you can do to relieve the anxiety.

You can only white-knuckle your way through life for so long, and if your anxiety becomes crippling, it’s important to seek professional intervention.

If You Fall Off Track, Tomorrow is a New Day

If You Fall Off Track, Tomorrow is a New DayMany people are so all or nothing with their goals that as soon as they miss a day, they scrap the whole thing.

Life is unpredictable. If you miss a day or somehow fall off track, so be it. Tomorrow is a fresh start.

Don’t try to cling to your goals with a tight fist. Rather, understand the ebb and flow of life. If you’re struggling with something, or your goals are making you anxious, make the conscious choice to put it on pause or alter it somehow so that it works better in your current situation.

Separate Your Goals From Your Self-Worth

Your goals and what you do or don’t accomplish say nothing about your worthiness as a human. Nobody is any better than anyone else based on what they have or haven’t accomplished.

Many people consciously understand this, yet it still affects them subconsciously.

Lighten Your Load

Setting resolutions when you’re already dealing with anxiety or unknowns can really bog you down. Focus on lightening your load, focus on one thing at a time.

Be aware of what you can control, and all the things you can’t. Make an effort to set aside what’s out of your control. There’s no use adding it to your burden if you’re unable to influence the outcome.

Don’t Forget To Do The Things That Make You Feel Good

Do The Things That Make You Feel GoodThe point of most resolutions is to create new habits that stick, and it’s important that you pay attention to the ones that make you feel good.

Prioritize time outdoors, movement, and connection with others. These are all scientifically proven to boost wellbeing in all sorts of incredible ways.

If you find that between work and family you don’t have many moments to dedicate towards these activities, try and blend the two. Get outside for a walk during part of your lunch break, or spend time in a park on the weekend with family.

These things are so simple that it’s easy to forget how impactful they can be.
