Gottman Method Intensive Couples Therapy Retreats in Sacramento, CA
Rediscover Love, Trust, And Connection in Just One Weekend in Sacramento
You’re not here because things are “a little off.” In fact, you’re here because the same conversations keep happening… the same fights… the same distance… the same feeling of “we can’t keep doing this.” You love each other—but something isn’t working or feels broken. And if you’re honest… you’re tired.
At The Relationship Therapy Center, we offer private couples therapy retreats and Gottman Intensives in the Sacramento area (Roseville & Fair Oaks, CA) designed to help you move out of stuck patterns and into real, lasting change—without months of waiting and circling the same issues.
Weekly therapy helps—but for many couples, it feels slow, interrupted, and frustrating. You talk about something…Then life happens…And by the next session, you’re right back where you started.
High-achieving couples often do not need generic communication tips; they are looking for results. They need a therapist who can quickly identify the pattern, interrupt what is not working, and help them practice a better way forward. Our approach combines the research-based structure of the Gottman Method with direct, relational coaching that addresses the deeper habits underneath conflict — defensiveness, control, withdrawal, resentment, emotional shutdown, and the need to be right. This creates therapy that is practical, honest, and deeply focused on change.
A Couple’s Intensive is Different
You get:
- Focused, uninterrupted time together
- The ability to go deeper—faster
- Real momentum instead of starting and stopping
- Space away from daily distractions
In just 2–3 days, we can often accomplish what might take months in weekly sessions.
This is where real breakthroughs happen.
What Makes Our Gottman Intensives Different
Many therapists offer what they call an “intensive,” but it often amounts to a few longer sessions without clear direction.
This is a true intensive.
We use a Gottman-based assessment and a targeted treatment plan to guide every hour we spend together—so you’re not just talking longer, you’re moving forward in a meaningful way. As a Certified Gottman Therapist, I have hand-picked the therapists who offer these, and we use one of the most research-backed approaches to couples therapy available today. While focusing our sessions on proven tools, we will also weave in Attachment, Differentiation, Sex Therapy, and a Trauma-Informed Approach to balance out your specific needs. But more importantly, we don’t just teach communication tools.
We help you:
- Understand why you keep getting stuck
- Break negative cycles that repeat over and over
- Rebuild emotional safety and trust
- Learn how to repair instead of shutting down or escalating
- Practice the tools while talking to each other in sessions with a coach guiding you
You won’t leave with just insight. Expect to leave knowing exactly what to do differently.
What This Experience Feels Like
You don’t need a resort to create transformation. What you need is a protected space to focus on your relationship without distractions.
During your intensive:
- No rushing between work and appointments
- No putting things off until “next week.”
- No interruptions pulling you out of the work
For these few days, your relationship becomes the priority. And that alone changes everything.
Common Issues Gottman Method Intensive Retreats Can Help With
In our Gottman Method intensive couples therapy retreats, we address a number of common concerns for couples, including:
- Communication struggles
- Infidelity
- Sexuality and intimacy issues
- Financial pressures
- Blended family or children-related difficulties
- Career conflicts
- Past hurt and resentment
What to Expect:
Before your intensive, we begin with a comprehensive Gottman assessment
The Gottman Relationship Checkup is a tool created by Drs. John and Julie Gottman. The assessment includes 480 questions that cover four categories: Friendship and Intimacy, The Conflict Scales, The Shared Meaning System, and Individual Areas of Concern. These questions address the levels of the Gottman Sound House as well as individual issues that may affect the relationship, topics of sex, parenting, finances, extended family, and more.
A link will be sent to you individually so it can be completed confidentially. Your clinician will receive the results when you both complete it. Your therapist will identify specific areas to work on with you based on the assessment. The overall assessment takes about 1.5 hours to complete because it is very thorough, but you can save your spot as you go. This becomes a clear map of your strengths and challenges. This allows us to walk in with a focused plan—not guesswork.
During your intensive, the first 3 hours include a couple’s interview and individual interviews with both of you, so all your concerns are addressed.
Then you will spend 2 or 3 days (9–15 hours total) in structured, guided sessions. We will:
- Identify your negative communication cycles
- Slow down and process key moments
- Teach and practice new ways of communicating
- Work through unresolved conflicts
- Rebuild connection and understanding
There is a balance of guided conversation, skill building, and real-time coaching.
After your intensive, we provide:
- Clear next steps
- Tools you can immediately apply
- Recommendations for continued support if needed
- A gift basket with treats and some books to take home.
The goal is not just insight—it’s sustainable change.

“We were able to discover not only what our strengths and challenge areas were but also tools to use in our relationship going forward. It was a great investment.”
R & S
“Had a better insight by day two than listening to other therapists for years.”
“By the end of the weekend we had a better understanding of how we got to this point and a real plan on how to move forward. Very few could have handled the wide range of problems we needed help understanding.” – Dave
“I think we’re going to be able to save our marriage.” – Mike
“Our experience was super positive. We got a lot out of it. Our therapist was really organized and we both loved how action-oriented the weekend was. It was tailored to us based on the questionnaire and we got a lot out of it. I loved how we were able to learn some strategies to take home. It’s a different way of doing therapy, including the strategies to take away with us, but it was great. It is an investment of time and money, but it was a good investment. I would recommend other couples take advantage of the weekend intensive.” – M
“Our intensive therapy was really intense and took us places I never thought we would discuss had it not been for this retreat, it was helpful in us understanding where one another was coming from.”
